Chapter Twelve

Liam watched Becca as she slept, her eyes skittering back and forth beneath her lids as though she was immersed in a dream. He wished there was a smile on her face right now, even a faint one that might suggest that the images dancing in her mind were pleasant ones.

But her brows were slightly pinched together, and there as a small crease at one side of her mouth. He was tempted to kiss her to consciousness, let him replace any negative thoughts that were consuming her right now. Yet he knew he shouldn’t. He’d kept her up most the night, and savored every moment he was inside of her, as though it was the only thing that proved to him that life could be more than an advance upward on the military hierarchy.

Her cheek twitched almost in a grimace, and he wondered what she saw in her mind’s eye right now. Was it carpool lines or teacher meetings? Bumper-to-bumper traffic on Highway 50 headed over the Bay Bridge? Was it a surplus of ice cream caused by a drop in winter sales?

Or was it him?

He didn’t like that last idea, but had to admit it was possible. He might be the source of some stress in her life. She’d made it clear she didn’t want more than a fling with him. No future. No depth. No emotions.

Hell, that should be every man’s fantasy. Including his. No, especially his, he concluded, telling himself that as a Soldier he should enjoy having no pressure to mold his life into someone else’s expectations.

Yet the idea of walking away from her again shook him.

He remembered too well the feeling that something had been lost to him when he’d watched her walk away that day at the Grand Canyon. He had gotten over it easily enough that time, even while his mind had drifted toward thoughts of her and her son every once in a while. Life marched on without her. And the Army kept him busy enough that he didn’t have the luxury of ruminating over his past.

It wouldn’t be so easy this time.

He jumped slightly at the sound of the phone next to him. Lunging for the cordless receiver, he managed to catch it before the first ring had even finished.

“Yeah?” His greeting was a whispered bark as he slid out of the bed, glancing at Becca’s still body.

“Hey. Thought I’d try catching Mom and Dad.”

“Jeez, Colm. It’s early here.”

“So? They’re early risers.”

“Well, they’re not here.” He was downstairs now, able to let annoyance seep into his usual volume.

“Where are they?”

“They got a room at some inn downtown for a couple nights.”

“Downtown DC?”

“No, Annapolis.”

“Why the hell would they want to stay in Annapolis? They live there.”

Maybe so their son could get a little action with the amazing woman downstairs, Liam couldn’t resist thinking. “I don’t know. Ask them. Want the number?”

“Nah. I’ll just talk to them on Christmas. So, if you’re alone, then why were you whispering?”

“I’m not whispering.”

“Before. When you picked up.
